Karito

A recent trip to New York included a visit to the United Nations to view a temporary exhibit entitled Karito (meaning “love of one’s neighbor”).
Karito is an audio sculpture made from musical interpretations of the 192 national anthems of the United Nations member states layered upon one another, projected simultaneously from multiple sound sources. As one moves through the exhibit, surrounded by a graphic display of lyrics from these 192 anthems, the audio experience is ever changing, as the songs play at random, and the listener’s position alters. No 2 listeners will hear the same collection of sounds; no single listener will hear the same sound twice. The symbol…3 sets of 64 circles (totaling 192) each a perfect form in itself together, like the sound of each anthem, in accord, creating something even more beautiful. A memorable experience.
In this time of economic challenges, political uncertainties, and increasing human and environmental health threats, experiencing this exhibit in sight and sound brings to mind a sense of duty as well as a thread of hope. And with the holiday season approaching a consciousness to spend time and energy on the things that matter most.
