March 22 is World Water Day

Water for Life

Water is a necessity. Water is essential to all living things…yet, one in eight people in the world don’t have access to safe water, millions of women and children must still spend several hours a day, collecting water from distant, often polluted sources, and 2.5 billion people live without a toilet.

The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) has marked March 22 as World Water Day, annually observed as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Each year, a theme is determined. 2009 marks "Shared Water - Shared Opportunities ", focusing on trans-boundary water and the idea that managing water across borders could promote trust and understanding, leading to a more peaceful and secure world, enabling sustainable economic growth.

As part of this international effort, right here in Kansas City, Water Partners International puts forth energy daily to raise grant funds and implement programs that assist with bringing clean, drinkable water and proper sanitation to over 8 developing countries. Water Partners strive to unite and collaborate with entities in these countries, that understand and are part of each local culture- honoring their knowledge of the land and people- to create projects that serve to benefit these communities and integrate technology, health and hygiene education, and instill a sense of duty and pride in the people of each community.
